This course is designed for students to practice science through inquiry based learning. For every piece of physical evidence brought into analysis, the student must apply the scientific method. The scientific method involves observation, collection and classification of data, looking for relationships and forming a hypothesis, testing hypotheses, and then advancing a conclusion or opinion. Students must then be prepared to defend conclusions based on their own evidence. This course will provide students with an introduction to the theoretical understanding and practical application of forensic science techniques including forensic DNA typing, bloodstain pattern analysis, forensic entomology, forensic toxicology, drugs and poisons, crime scene investigations, evidence collection and examination, understanding the relationship between forensic science and legal studies, and career opportunities in forensics.
